Modern dolls

Maisha, made by Malaville

One of the blogs I like to follow is Wendy’s blog Dirks’ Dolls. Wendy writes an awesome doll photo story about the life of the West Enders. One of her characters is “played” by the Rainbow Dress (or Rainbow Bright) Fashionista Barbie, and Wendy has swapped her doll’s body with an articulated one. I wanted my own Rainbow doll to have some articulation too, so I asked Wendy where she got the body. Wendy told me it was Maisha’s body, a doll made by the South African company Malaville.

I ordered Maisha and within a week she arrived.

I would like to take the opportunity to give a big thank you to Wendy, who was so kind to direct me to this company. 🙂

Let’s take a closer look at Maisha.

Maisha’s afro has nice thick curls. On the box there’s a warning: “Excessive brushing of doll’s hair will alter the curls”. Her head can be rotated in all directions. The body has moulded-on underwear; it doesn’t have a rotating waist. The arms have limited articulation at the shoulders and elbows. The knees bend with a click system.

The outfit is basic: a white shirt with “Lavi” printed on it and blue jodhpurs.

Maisha has high heel feet, and wears black pumps that are a bit too big for her. The shoes don’t fall off though.

… And now I’m supposed to show pictures of the body swap between Maisha and the Fashionista… I just couldn’t do it! I love this doll as she is and don’t want to take her apart! So, what I’m going to do is wait until my doll budget allows me to order a second Maisha, along with Lola, a gorgeous redhead with freckles and a caramel skin tone, and re-body Rainbow girl later. 🙂

On another note: Yéyé Dolls is going on a summer break and will return in September. Real life duty calls! I have a living/dining room to redecorate and a garden that needs a higher fence. The redecorating includes sanding the painted wood doors and repainting them and removing the old wallpaper (my tasks, yaaay).

I’ll be back with entries about the makeover of my Furga Damina doll Mimi (repaint of the lips and a new hair-do) and her new dress, my progress on the maid’s uniform inspired by the TV series Gran Hotel, and new scans of leaflets, that’s been a while.

I wish you all a beautiful summer (or a cozy winter if you’re living down under). Stay safe and careful but don’t forget to have fun! 🙂

Congratulations on getting a Maisha doll! I have Alexa from the Malaville line, but I’m also looking to get Maisha and Lola. The postage is steep, but I love my Alexa. I look forward to seeing your Maisha with your other dolls and/or redressed.

Hope you have a great break, that you stay safe and cool, and that you accomplish all that you want during these hot season.

Hi Dana, thank you! 🙂 Lola is also lovely, and I love that she’s a flight attendant. I may get Alexa as well, it depends on how much shipping for 3 dolls will be. I thought that this company was planning on making outfits, but maybe I read that wrong. I do hope they will keep producing dolls. Thanks, I hope to get a lot done with the redecorating, and also hope that it won’t get too hot. 🙂

Oh Maisha is simple beautiful. She looks like she could be the younger sister of my Nichelle (Model of the Moment) doll. They are both the same color and both have big Afros, but Nichelle is “older” and more sophisticated. It’s fun knowing she has a pretty little sister out there! Thank you for putting up the link to that site. Wow… each one is super cute. If more people knew about them, they could really give Mattel a run for their money where dolls of color are concerned.

Hi April, she does look like Nichelle’s younger sister! 🙂 The owner of Malaville is a fashion model and a doll collector, an ideal combination to design dolls! I really hope we will keep seeing new dolls from this company, I love these dolls. 🙂

    Hi Linda –
I’m unable to see any pictures on your latest post about Maisha. Also, when I clicked the link to your blog, your IP pathway numbers (I think that’s what they are called) are showing on the address bar. Not sure if that’s supposed to be there.

HI Teresa, thank you for letting me know about this problem. I will try to find out what’s causing this, sorry for the inconvenience.

Yes, thank you, I can see the photos now. Maisha is so cute! Looking forward to seeing Lola when she arrives. I will have to check out Malaville. I am still seeing the pathway numbers though.
        Good luck with your renovations.

Hi Teresa, I’m glad you can see the photos now. Lola is also lovely, I hope to be able to order her soon. The numbers showing is not a problem, I use DDNS via no-IP and that’s why the numbers show. I host this blog myself and use what’s available for free to run it. Thanks, I hope I can get everything done in these two months. 🙂 Thank you so much for dropping by, and I wish you a great summer!

Hi Lynn, I’m glad you like her! Hahaha, you’re hooked too, it’s great isn’t it. 🙂 Thanks, I hope the temperatures won’t be too high so I don’t melt while sanding and papering. 🙂

She’s lovely Linda, but she looks like she’s going to be difficult to photograph.
Hope you enjoy your summer break and all the renos you have to do . . . I envy the summer warmth, but not those renos, been there and done that so many times I’ve lost count, the last time I swore never again! 🙂
    We’ll miss you around here.

Hi Sandi, she’s not easy to photograph, although admittedly I didn’t use my artificial daylight lamps, those will probably make it easier. I’ve done renovations many times too, so I know what to expect unfortunately hahaha! The wood doors have layer upon layer of old paint… Not easy to remove! I’ll miss you too, big hugs!

Hi Linda. For the only one photo I can see, she’s so beautiful and her hair is amazing.
I don’t know why I can’t see the photos in your post. I have checked it on my phone too and neither can see them. I have also noticed the same thing Teresa F. says about the IP numbers, neither I’m sure if it’s normal.
Have fun in your summer holidays.
    Greetings ^^

This is the first time I’m seeing Malaville doll, but I must say that I perfectly understand your decision – she is just too cute to be decapitated! This body will be great for Rainbow Dress, but it’s great to hear, that you will get second Maisha for that :). Have wonderful summer vacation!

    • Linda

      Linda

Hi Chiriann, I like her so much that she’s standing on my desk right now and cheers me up every time I look at her. 🙂 The skin tone goes very well with the skin tone of Rainbow, she’ll have to be patient but will get her new body eventually. 🙂

Maisha is really cute. 🙂 Thanks to your blog I can discover so many lovely dolls! I think Maisha’s body can be compared to Mattel’s Generation Girl. It’s slim and similarly articulated (minus the waist). And I like her curls. No wonder you don’t want to get rid of her head. 🙂
    Have a pleasant summer break!

    • Linda

      Linda

HI Nana, I’m so glad that my blog lets you discover new dolls! You’re right, the body is very similar to Generation Girl dolls. Maisha’s hair is lovely, isn’t it. 🙂 I wish you happy summer months as well!

    Monster Crafts

How did I miss this post? This doll is actually very pretty and I feel like lately I’ve seen her or another one from this line on Instagram. I’ve checked out the price point and they’re not too expensive, considering this seems to be an indie company. I think that Mattel could learn a thing or two from this line, aka, give us some articulated dolls at an affordable price point.

I just read the comment you left on my blog. I hope that you will recover soon from your injuries and manage to redecorate your living room. We’ll miss you, but I’m sure you’ll drop by our blogs from time to time.

    Take care.

      Linda

Hi Monster Crafts! They are indeed affordable and pretty, I hope this company will continue to expand. Thank you for your well wishes, I’m healing nicely, but my left knee is still hurting. I think I can start with the redecorating soon though. 🙂 I definitely will drop by by your blogs, don’t won’t to miss too much! Take care too!

Have a nice and decoratively useful summer!! (I also will be making some painting and redecorating some of my rooms)
    Lots of kisses

      Linda

Hi Rosana! I misses a lot of posts too, and am trying to catch up. I’m glad that you like Maisha, I’m very fond of her! 🙂 She’s so cheerful looking, with her lovely smile. The pants are great aren’t they, I love them! Good luck with your redecorating! I bought wallpaper from the new collections, it’s all big flowers, jungles and exotic animals now, and it fits so well with our old house and furniture. 🙂 We chose wallpaper with monkeys on it, for one wall, I think I’m going to love it. 😀 Lots of kisses back!
